Hosting an Event Doors Open Ontario

Expert Article By: Francine Gielis

From April to October each year, communities open the doors to some of their most intriguing and charming heritage sites. Admission to those events is free. And everyone is invited to experience these hidden heritage treasures first-hand. Communities boast of their commercial buildings, courthouses, places of worship, gardens, and natural heritage sites.

In early spring 2006 we were asked to participate in the Doors Open Event in our County.

Doors Open started in France in 1984 and soon spread to neighboring countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Scotland. In 1991, these events were united as European Heritage Days

In 2000, the City of Toronto started the first Doors Open event in North America and in 2002, the Ontario Heritage Trust launched the province wide Doors Open Ontario. It is now held across North America with events now being held in Newfoundland, Alberta, Massachusetts, Western New York State, New York City and Denver.

We own a modern Equestrian facility, home to a breeding farm of Warmblood horses and a riding school. We?ve organized many tours over the years and we were quite willing to participate. We were asked to send a good photo of our facility and this photo, along with a short description of our site, was published in the official Doors Open magazine. This magazine is available at all tourists? information booths.

Several information sessions were held where we were given information about what to do. We were given Doors Open T shirts for our volunteers, tracking sheets, survey sheets, and many flyers.

Having about 40 horses, mares, stallions, young stock and schooling horses, we had some very busy days before hand.

The riding school students had been practicing a musical show, called a quadrille, where they preformed to music on horseback. It is always a very nice opportunity for the students to show off to the public what they can do. The day before the Event they all came to wash their horses, braid them and fancy them up. White ponies all of a sudden had a pink tail and main thanks to Cool Aid juice.

Riders and horses were color coordinated, with orange or yellow ribbons and beads in their mane, and the same color polos and saddle pads.

On the days of the event people started coming in at 10 am and a steady stream of visitors came in till we took the signs away on the road at 5 pm. We had a program for our days, and although we did send it to the organizing committee and the radio, most people did not know about the program, missing out on some of the parts they would have liked to see.

Besides the musical performance by the students on horse back, we also had one of our stallions jump on an artificial mare while we collected his semen. We then had the people look at the semen under the microscope so that they could see how that looked. This was definitely one of the most popular events as not many people get a chance to see it.

We closed the day off with a demonstration free-jumping, a training aid for young horses. Free-jumping is when horses jump over a series of jumps without a rider on their back. This is so we can judge their natural ability as jumpers.

We also took the people around through the barns explaining the equipment we have, like a computerized exercise machine and other features of the facility.

The purpose of a Doors Open Event is so that people can discover what heritage is in their area and see facilities they normally would not have a chance to see.

Several hundreds of people passed through our facility those two days and many commented on how wonderful the Doors Open program is. If there is a Doors Open Event in your area, attend it, it is definitely worthwhile.

Resolved Question: Advice on plot? What would you rather see?

Now, bear with me here okay? I literally just thought this plot, if you could call it that at this point, like an hour ago and it's about as loose as...(inset witty analogy here) Here it is: I've got this picture in my head, a young teenage heroine with some sort of supernatural (or perhaps not) ability, maybe one that isn't developed just yet. Then there's a villain, a woman though, who's after this young heroine. The heroine by some way is traveling with two young men, one of whom works for our villain, they are also (perhaps) supernatural, and are there to protect her. So yeah, it's really loose I know. And I do need some advice: 1) Should this tale take place in our world (if so, I was thinking coastal Washington, US into Canada) or in a world that I should create? (To add a more supernatural feel?) 2) I was planning on having our heroine fall in love with the man that does not betray her, but should there be some tension between her and the one that does? 3) What should our villain want out of the heroine? (I was maybe thinking her power, by killing her in a rather dramatic ceremony, the villain gets the heroine's power) Any other general advice would be great. Thanks so much guys?

Open Question: What to pack when traveling to Niagara Falls, Canada?

I am going to Niagara Falls, Canada Memorial Day Weekend. I have been to the Falls and Clifton Hill multiple times, the most recent in August (first time in probably 4-5 years). I always feel like I forget something important though whenever I go! I know I'll be going to the Falls, Clifton Hill, Marineland, possibly Maid of the Mist and Fallsview Water Park... can someone please provide me with a good list of key what to bring? Also, what might the weather be like? I'm not sure what clothes to bring I'll probably bring items for every type of weather so I'll be prepared.. I'll be there 3 nights, 4 days. Thanks in advance!:)

Open Question: How do I use public transportation in Edinburgh?

Hello there! I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh Scotland, but I have no idea how to get around in the city. I'd like to learn as much as I can before I get there, so I don't waste time trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B. I'd like to stay somewhere central in Edinburgh, near the City Center, or close by. Where do I buy bus tickets? What's the best bus company to use? Is there access to their routes and schedules online? Also, I will be in Glasgow just prior to traveling to Edinburgh, and I will need to take a train into Edinburgh. What train company is best, and can I book online here in Canada before I go? I so, how do I get my ticket? Thank you everyone! Cheers!

Open Question: Dual citizenship/European Union question?

Alright so I'm a Canadian teenager with a Portuguese father who currently holds dual-citizenship of both Portugal and Canada. My first question is, as he has a Portuguese birth certificate and is still a citizen, would I be able to become a dual citizen easily? I'm still a minor. Also, when you live in Europe, is it easier to travel around? In terms of living? I really want to live in Scotland or Ireland and I was wondering that if by becoming a dual citizen of Portugal and thereby a citizen of a country in the EU, it would be easier to move to Scotland or Ireland than if I was just a Canadian citizen? Thanks!

Open Question: How does one go about suing a company for false advertising in Canada?

There is a travel company that is using misleading advertising. I know that the gov is considering cracking down on misleading advertising in the travel industry, so I think I might have an aly with them.

Open Question: Is this a scam?? Hepp Furniture LTD?

Is this a scam?? Hepp Furniture LTD? I replied to a job ad on kajiji for a job assistant and got a reply from a company called HEPP FURNITURE LTD. They said they are opening a new location in the city and will have a representative come in a few weeks for training. however, in time, i would do training from home for 3 weeks trial period, the job would be part-time(any 2 hours daily, you do not work everyday) and becomes full time when the branch is opened in your city. A company representative will be sent to your city on the 28th of May to meet. You will be paid $400 weekly(for the duration of the training which is 3 weeks and will earn $20 per hour after the training) as your basic wage and a transport allowance of $200 at the end of each month but note that the job does not require any traveling as you will be working in the outlet when it is opened. For the time being, your pay will be deducted from payments sent to you by our customers. It sounds very fishy to me that i would be deducting my own payments and dealing with money for a company that hasnt even met me. I asked for him to call so i can speak on the phone to discuss details but no one has done that yet. It sounds like scam does anyone know if this is a scam??? Also, they emailed me my first job today which is to find cheap prices for some office equipment that they sent a list for. and they said they have a client who has send me a payment to my address!! :S and gave me a canada post tracking number

Open Question: Is it true that Americans sew the canadian flag on their stuff while abroad?

This is from, travel Canada website- "Canadians enjoy such good reputations overseas that now many Americans have started sewing Canadian flags on their backpacks as well! This makes it quite difficult to distinguish between real Canadians and fake Canadians. In these cases you will need to use some of the other tips you have learned to separate the Canucks from the "Faux-nucks."
